Market

This project is a small-scale FPS PVP map inspired by the success of Call of Duty's maps, Rust and Nuketown. The level has three main nodes of activity in fairly close proximity to allow for quick casual rounds of play.

Some of the most iconic FPS PVP game maps are Call of Duty's Rust and Nuketown. These maps are incredibly small, but this scale allows for games to progress very quickly and aggressively.

My real-world inspiration for aesthetics was Camden Market in London. The scale of the area has larger open spaces and nodes surrounded by tight alleys and the height of the buildings does not feel overbearing.

Layout

I started the process of mapping by making some quick sketches of the basic layout of each node and the negative space between them. I then started looking at the nodes internally, further breaking up the space.

The map revolves around three main nodes of activity that are laid out on a diagonal axis. The spaces within the nodes are then broken up further with small forms.

Blockout Process

  • I created a central hub node at the central location of the map to allow for easy navigation.

  • Vertical elements were added to this node with two occupiable buildings with a second floor, allowing for more sightlines.

  • The circular node has an S-shaped path in the center to break up the radial nature of the space.

  • This allows for more gradual corner peeking as opposed to sharp corners.

  • The map has long corridors between the nodes allowing for long range combat to still exist in a very close quarters setting.

  • Cover is placed to help obscure the sightlines enough that the corridor does not become a kill box for snipers.

  • More openly traversable areas with sporadic cover were added to contrast the corridors.

  • Allows more freedom of movement and long sightlines are less powerful for holding angles in these zones.
